Family Friendly Las Vegas

How was your stay in Las Vegas?

What did you do with your kids while in Las Vegas? Did you have a good time? What activities did you enjoy most? Do you have any ideas for me to add to my site? Can you recommend a new hotel or casino? I am very interested in your input. Please tell me about your stay in Las Vegas.

  • Our Excalibur Review

We really liked our stay at Excalibur. No one thing was exceptional, but as a bundle, the place was really fun, relaxed and friendly for our family of five. There was plenty to do for kids, which was really nice, and there were lots of other families there, so we felt really comfortable. The pool scene was fun for families and singles. We all seemed to mingle together in the hot tubs because the main pool was a bit cool for adults. The kids didn't mind the cooler big pool. We didn't like the pool closing at 5 p.m. because it just got warm enough to swim around 3 p.m.
The arcade was great with the Spongebob 4D rides, the Tournament of the Kings was really good, the $25 all you can eat all day was excellent, the free drink vouchers and free drinks at tables were also a bonus.
Our rooms were average, but hey, we were hardly in them. We paid for a view room the first night so we could get the two for one Tournament of the Kings vouchers. The room had a beautiful view of the NY NY roller coaster and part of the strip, and it had a big screen TV, but there was no cable, so it wasn't really worth it. We downgraded to Tower 1 the following nights, which were next to the bar we liked but far far away from the pool. It was embarrassing walking through the casino in our swimmers, but everyone else was doing it so we didn't care so much.

After staying at Excalibur I decided to create a web site called Family Friendly Las Vegas at http://www.familyfriendlylasvegas.com.
  • Book Smoke-Free Hotels in Las Vegas

I've just added a page that lists Smoke-Free Hotels in Las Vegas on my site at http://www.familyfriendlylasvegas.com.

I haven't stayed in any of these hotels so I can't give personal comments about them. Usually however,  Marriotts are very good as we stay in them in other towns regularly.

They are also not located on the Las Vegas Strip. There is always free parking behind the major casinos for those hotels that are too far to walk. I like to park behind Excalibur. It usually has ground floor parking and is an easy walk through the casino.
  • Booking families of five in one room

While putting this site together I got an interesting e-mail. Ironically, it was from a mom who saw my Tripadvisor review of Excalibur.  She asked me if she could book a family of five in one hotel room. I replied to her, saying that she probably could. Some hotels have 4000 rooms. They are not too worried about where your third child sleeps, but sometimes its better not to say anything. Hotels are very competitivie these days. If you have three hungry children, it is likely that they will all eat and shop in their hotel during your stay. I called recently to confirm this fact and was basically told that if they didn't know about it, they wouldn't do anything.

Thank you for your response. We actually ended up canceling and going with Desert Rose Resort. It seems that it is close enough to the strip that we won't need transportation and it is smoke free. My son has allergies and asthma and I just don't want him to be in a smoking environment at night. I know they say the rooms are non-smoking, but my experience in the past is that smoke travels! Especially in places like this. In addition, we like that Desert Rose is non-gaming and is more like a 2 bedroom apartment. We were able to get a two bedroom/two bathroom with a sleeper sofa for just $4 more than the room at Excalibur.

  • Hotels with Animals

Something to mention is a hotel that we just stayed in twice called the Microtel.

It is a couple of miles from the strip and it is cheap, under 50 dollars and it includes breakfast and has a fab pool for the kids and a fitness centre and you can also have animals…..some of your customers may be interested in this,

It also includes breakfast and is non smoking and is really quite nice and is directly next door to the outlet shops……very cool indeed for those who don’t like lining up to check in or out.

    I highly recommend it.

  • Should we rent a car while in Las Vegas?

If you stay on the central Strip, you don't really need to rent a car. Nearly everything you want to see is along the Strip, which is a couple of miles long. (So you do walk a lot).
The Strip gets very busy, so it's actually difficult to use your car.
There is a monorail, see where it goes on the link on my site.
There is also a regular bus service along the Strip.
At the very north end of the Strip is the Fremont Street Experience, which requires a car, but there may be buses to it too. You can ask at the reception of your hotel if you find the time to get over to it.
If you book a hotel off-Strip, you will need a car, as the Vegas City blocks are very big and the casinos are quite far away.
The airport is about 2 miles from the Strip, so you will need to organize transportation from there. There are shuttle buses at the airport door and some hotels have their own buses.

If you do rent a car, parking is easy at the back of each casino.

I rarely use my car in Las Vegas, except to drive to the Outlet stores, or Fremont Street.
